Réthymnonin rantakaupunki osoittautui mainioksi tukikohdaksi railakkaille skootteriretkille. Veri veti ison luksuspyörän kahvoihin, mutta järki, matkakassa ja vaimo puhuivat vaatimattomamman vaihtoehdon puolesta. Näillä eväillä astelimme Réthymnonin Mega Bikes -vuokraamoon vertailemaan hintoja. Pian hyppäsimme uudenkarhean 125-kuutioisen Suzukin selkään ja kaasuttelimme tien päälle. Vuokra viideltä päivältä oli kohtuulliset 80 euroa vakuutuksineen.
Beach town Réthymnon seemed like a great base camp for thrilling scooter trips. Veri pulled the big luxury bike to the café but … We went to Mega Bikes rental in Réthymnon to compare prices. Soon we hopped on the back of the new rough 125 cubic Suzuki and we cruised to the road. The rent for five days was properly 80 EUR including insurance.
Vaikka Réthymnonissa on kilometreittäin uimarantaa, skootterilomalainen ei jää hiekalle makailemaan. Opaskirjoissa kerrottiin Kurtaliotikon rotkosta, jonka kautta pystyy ajamaan saaren etelärannikolle. Päätimme, että se oli koettava. Ajelimme pitkin kiemurtelevaa tietä, joka sukelsi yhtäkkiä korkeiden vuorten väliin. Tuuli ravisteli skootteria rajusti, ja kun pysähdyimme hetkeksi kanjonin leveimmällä kohdalla olevalle näköalapaikalle, pelkäsimme, että kulkupelimme kaatuisi. Jatkettuamme taas jonkin matkaa pysäköimme tien varteen ja astuimme kiviportaille, jotka polveilivat rotkon pohjalle. Ne veivät Pyhän Nikolauksen kappeliin, jonka vieritse virtaa Kurtaliotisjoki.
Even though Réthymnon has beach for 1km, scooter holiday makers don’t stay lying on the sand. In the guide book Kurtaliotiko valley was mentioned through which one can drive to the south beach of the island. We decided that it is doable. We drove along the winding road that dived abruptly into the mountains. The wind shook the scooter strongly and when we stopped for a second at the view place on the canon’s.., we were afraid that our … would fall. After continuing the journey, we stopped for the road to stand on a stone stairs that twisted to the bottom of the valley. They lead to St. Nicolas Church that Kurtaliotis River's current rolls by.
Paluumatkalla hurautimme Plakiásin vanhaan kalastajakylään. Se on kohtuullisen vilkas turistikeskus upeine hiekkarantoineen ja tavernoineen. Palkitsimme itsemme rotkoseikkailun reippaudesta lounaalla, jonka nautimme tavernassa viilentävien puiden varjossa. Samalla saimme ihailla kimaltelevaa merta ja kuunnella kaskaiden laulua.
On the return trip we speeded up to Plakias old fishing village. It is a vivid tourist center of great sand beaches and taverns. We rewarded ourselves lunch for the valley adventure and we enjoyed in the shadow of cooling trees in the tavern. At the same time we got to admire the shining ocean and listen to the singing of…
Olimme jo luovuttaneet kelpo skootterimme yli seitsemänsadan turvallisesti ajetun kilometrin jälkeen, kun tapasimme sattumalta vuokraamon omistajan kaupungilla. Hän ilahtui nähdessään meidät, ehkä siksi, ettemme olleet rikkoneet menopeliä. Hän pyysi odottamaan hetken, kipaisi nurkan taakse ja palasi leveästi hymyillen. Kädessään hänellä oli lahjapakettiin kääritty ouzo-pullo, jonka hän ojensi vaimolleni Kaarinalle. Hän kiitti liikesuhteestamme ja kehotti nauttimaan lämmikettä palattuamme takaisin kylmään Suomeen.
We were already on the way to deliver our scooter ... safely after 1km drive and we met accidentally the owner in town. He was happy seeing us, maybe because we didn’t break … He asked to wait a second, tipped to the back corner and came back with a big small. In his hand he had a gift packet of wrapped ouzo ball that he handed over to my wife Kaarina. He thanked us for the business and told us to enjoy the sun when we return to Finland.
